Design a new engine for renewble fuel?

i am in an argument with my friend about new ways to run cars without burning fossil fuels. he says hydrogen fuel cells, and i say those are bad cause hydrogen is very flamable and will blow up if ignited. please give me new ideas to run cars without fossil fuels.
